PREP SOFTBALL: Mustangs make quick work of host Grinnell

GRINNELL – East Marshall put up four runs or more in four of five innings, easily beating Grinnell 16-1 in Monday’s high school softball opener.

The Mustangs, who placed fifth in the Class 3A state softball tournament a year ago, rapped out 15 hits in support of pitcher Haley Long. Long struck out two and allowed only three hits in the win.

East Marshall leadoff batter Mariah Fritz went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while Paige Miller and Katie Roseland had three hits apiece. Long, Kylee Hoskey and Sophia Grego each drove in two runs.

The Mustangs return to action with their first home game on Thursday, entertaining PCM.

AGWSR 1, Iowa Falls-Alden 0

ACKLEY – A fourth-inning double by Morgan Rose drove in courtesy runner Becca Wiarda as the game’s only run, lifting AGWSR to a 1-0 win over Iowa Falls-Alden on Monday night.

Cougar sophomore pitcher Ashley Sicard tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out 15 while walking only one. AGWSR amassed just five hits behind her, but it was enough to win. Hannah Johnson, Marissa Horner, Marissa Roberts and Sicard each had a single.

Losing pitcher Lindsay Barnhart struck out two and walked one. She also had a double, while Shanaya Schutt added the Cadets’ only other hit.
