Clark’s trio gets Rebels into substate title match

CENTER POINT – Chase Clark tallied a hat trick and the Class 1A No. 9-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team advanced to the substate finals with a 3-1 win over No. 16 Center Point-Urbana on Wednesday.

Clark gave the Rebels (11-5) a 3-0 lead before the Stormin’ Pointers broke their scoring silence just before the intermission. Neither team could find the back of the net in the second half, and G-R moved on.

“The kids played really hard, we didn’t do anything great but we came out and got after it,” said Rebels coach Kirk Dinsdale. “Josh (Cooley) made a couple great saves in the last 15 minutes to keep us in it.”

Camden Kickbush contributed one assist on a corner kick.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck will face No. 3-ranked Waterloo Columbus (13-2) at noon Saturday in Waterloo. The Sailors dispatched Denver 4-1 in Wednesday’s semifinal contest.

In Class 2A action, No. 4-ranked Norwalk narrowly escaped with a 1-0 win over South Tama in their Substate 7 semifinal in Norwalk. Mitch Phipps scored the Warriors’ lone goal on an assist from Michael Riordan, giving Norwalk (11-7) its sixth win in its last seven outings.

South Tama ended the season 6-11.
