Aquatic center prepares for opening day

Just in time for the end of the school year, the Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center is set to open its doors late next week.

Chad Weir, Marshalltown Parks and Recreation superintendent, said the aquatic center will open to the public May 31, and all hours will remain the same.

The hours are noon to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, he said.

After hot temperatures last summer and little precipitation, Weir said the aquatic center had one of its best years since first opening.

“We had one of our best summers ever last year because of the heat,” he said. “We had some mechanical problems, but last year was a good year for us.”

Proper swimsuit apparel is required, which means no cutoff shirts or underwear are allowed, but T-shirts may be worn at the discretion of the lifeguards. Men must also have a liner in their swim trunks, Weir said.

Weir said the aquatic center attendance and revenue is all weather dependent.

“The temperature needs to be 70 degrees or higher to be open,” he said.

Weir said everything looks good so far and the aquatic center will be up and running by the middle of next week.

“We’re putting the finishing touches on,” he said. “There are a lot of little things you have to do, but we’re looking to be ready by next week.”

Pool closings will be broadcasted through local media or you can call 641-844-1515 or 641-754-5779 to find out more information.
