SPORTS SHORTS: STC/EM girls soccer season ended
INDEPENDENCE – Suzi Grover and Kendra Kehrli scored and Mackenzie Thompson stopped five shots for the shutout as Independence advanced past the South Tama/East Marshall girls’ soccer team with a 2-0 win in Thursday’s Class 2A Region 6 opener.
Independence (11-6) advances to face top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier on its home turf Tuesday. Ninth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock hosts No. 11 Union in Tuesday’s other regional semifinal.
South Tama goalkeeper Sam Earley stopped 18 shots in net, and Hannah Keckler came in late in the second half and made four stops. The Trojans managed just a handful of shots on goal, however, and saw their season end 0-16.
Hoover takes down MHS sophomores
Des Moines Hoover capitalized on three walks and two errors in the top of the first inning, taking a lead it would never relinquish in a 3-1 win over the Marshalltown sophomore baseball team on Thursday at the MHS diamond.
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half inning and won despite getting outhit 5-3. Marshalltown (0-3) scored its only run in the fifth, as Jordan Smith came across on a sacrifice fly by Brandin Chaloupek.
Smith had two of Marshalltown’s five hits. Jeffrey Miron had a double, while Luke Severson and losing pitcher Jack Greene added singles. Greene allowed only two hits in three innings but walked six and struck out five. Sam Rogers tossed four innings in relief, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
The Bobcats host Waterloo East on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
