PREP SOFTBALL: Mustangs reign at BGM tourney again
BROOKLYN – The East Marshall softball team captured the BGM Tournament title for the third year in a row, beating Iowa Valley and roughing up both Davis County and the host Bears on Saturday.
The Class 3A No. 4-ranked Mustangs (6-0) scored four times in the first two innings, and Haley Long made the lead stick for a 4-2 victory over Iowa Valley in Saturday’s opener. She struck out seven, walked five and allowed two runs on three hits.
Paige Miller went 3-for-4, stole three bases and scored a run, while Ashley Allen was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Mariah Fritz was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
East Marshall followed that up with a 15-0 rout of Davis County (4-5), tallying 12 times in the fifth and final frame. Fritz tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out five and walking none.
Offensively, Taylor Fricke went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, and Callie Roseland was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Kylee Hoskey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Miller, Allen and Sophie Grego had two hits apiece. Grego doubled twice and drove in a pair.
The Mustangs struck for six runs in the first inning on their way to a 13-3, five-inning win over BGM (1-7). Fritz, Fricke, Allen, Grego and Long each had two of the team’s 13 hits, including two doubles for Allen. Fricke drove in four runs while Fritz, Roseland and Grego plated two apiece. Fricke also doubled and scored three times.
Long gave up three runs in three innings for the win, while Fritz tossed two shutout frames with four strikeouts in relief.
East Marshall goes to Ackley tonight to face 2A No. 12-ranked AGWSR in an NICL West Division clash.
Comets claim consolation
HUXLEY – The Class 2A No. 9 BCLUW softball team rebounded from its first loss of the young season Friday by taking both of its contests Saturday to claim the consolation title at the Ballard Softball Festival.
After falling 7-1 to 5A No. 5 Ankeny on Friday night, the Comets (3-1) bounced back to defeat 2A No. 8 Woodbury Central and Colo-NESCO.
BCLUW scored three runs in the top of the first on its way to a 3-1 win over Woodbury Central. Makayla Van Cleave, Kendall Scurr and Sarah McCoy’s courtesy runner Haley Veldhouse each scored in the opening at-bat, with RBIs coming from McCoy and Sara Sharp.
Mallory Vawter led the Comets with two hits, while Olivia Callaway tossed a five hitter. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven.
BCLUW finished out its run on the back side of the bracket with a 9-0, five-inning romp over Colo-NESCO. Jessica deNeui was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Callaway drove in three runs. Nicolette Simpson struck out 10 and walked two in the win, allowing six hits.
Erica Babinat was 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Royals (1-4). Hannah Buseman and Peyton Hall also finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Sam Riese took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs before she could get an out in the second.
Colo-NESCO, which lost to eventual champion Ballard in Friday night’s first round, defeated Okoboji in Saturday’s consolation semifinal game. The Royals broke open their 4-3 lead with five runs in the sixth inning for a 9-3 triumph.
Babinat got the win, allowing one earned run on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts. Hall and Riese both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Colo-NESCO goes on the road to face GMG today in Iowa Star Conference play, while BCLUW journeys to South Tama for NICL West Division action.
