Conrad to celebrate Black Dirt Days this weekend

Conrad will be hopping with activity Friday and Saturday as its annual festival – Black Dirt Days – returns.

This year the festival is going with a full carnival instead of just a few inflatable rides. The rides start Friday night and run all day and late into the night Saturday.

“We’ve had a lot of suggestions from people who wanted more stuff for the teenagers,” said Angie Martin, chair of the festival. “We’ll try the carnival this year and see if it works or doesn’t work.”

The popular parade will head through town at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Grand marshal of the parade is legendary BCLUW coach Dave Lee. The 2013 Little Ms. and Mr. Black Dirt Days are Devin Peterson and Owen Myers.

“The parade has been getting better all the time,” Martin said.

There will be two truck-and-tractor pull events Saturday, one at 9 a.m. and one at 2 p.m.

“Last year was our first year for the pulls and they were really popular,” Martin said.

The fireworks show is planned for 9:30 p.m. Friday, and Martin said she expects a show bigger than last year.

Music will be featured after the sun goes down on both nights. The local band Route 66 will perform Friday night, and a dueling pianos show will be Saturday night as part of the street dances.

This year’s Black Dirt Days theme is Dog Daze of Summer, and Martin said they have had wonderful community support and sponsorship again this year.
