Help light up the sky

With one month left to go, fundraising efforts for Marshalltown’s annual Fourth of July celebration are in full swing.

Denny Grabenbauer, fireworks committee chair, said he has once again partnered with Hy-Vee to help raise the $12,000 it takes to put on the fireworks display, and on Wednesday, a portion of the money made at Hy-Vee’s food court will go toward the display.

“I’ve been partners with Hy-Vee, and they’ve been very instrumental,” he said. “Hy-Vee is just a super partner.”

Erin Dehl, manager of store operations at the Marshalltown Hy-Vee, said 10 percent of the sales from the kitchen, Italian Express, salad bar, Chinese and Starbucks on Wednesday will go toward the fireworks.

“It’s nice to donate to something that the whole community can enjoy, and we can be proud of a nice fireworks display,” she said.

Along with the fundraiser, Hy-Vee will also have root beer floats at the Farmers Market on Main Street Thursday night, and throughout the month of June, root beer floats will be available at the store every Saturday.

“All proceeds will go to the fireworks,” Dehl said.

Grabenbauer said, once again, there will be live entertainment, inflatables for the kids, what he calls “Marshall County’s biggest sandbox,” miniature golf and a few surprise performances.

“I just want people to get out because they can get good entertainment close to home, and the biggest thing is it’s all free,” he said. “I think it’s going to be the best in the Midwest right here in Marshalltown.”

Donation containers are also located at the cash register’s at Hy-Vee, and checks can be mailed to the Fourth of July committee at 1 East Main St. if you would like to donate, Grabenbauer said.

The annual Fourth of July celebration will be Thursday, July 4. Activities and entertainment will start at 3 p.m., and fireworks will begin promptly at 9:34 p.m.
