PREP BASEBALL: South Tama a walk-off winner over Comets, 9-8
TAMA – Kaleb Davenport’s two-run double delivered the walk-off win for South Tama as the Trojans rallied twice for a 9-8 win in Monday’s eight-inning NICL West Division showdown.
BCLUW led 7-2 before South Tama tallied five times in the bottom of the sixth to tie, eventually forcing extra innings. The Comets struck first in the eighth, getting a pinch-hit, run-scoring single from Nolan Emley to drive in Mitch Miller.
South Tama responded. Clay Waterbury reached with a leadoff walk, Tank Keckler’s sacrifice bunt moved him up, and Kolton Smith received an intentional walk. Davenport followed with a drive to the fence, scoring both runners for the walk-off victory.
Lane Caster took the loss for BCLUW (1-3, 0-2), going 1 2/3 innings in relief of Tyler Lutes. Lutes struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings, and Caster struck out three.
Caster had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Comets offensively. Isaac Novak had a two-run single, while Conner Ubben and Cole Silver both had two singles.
The Comets host Gladbrook-Reinbeck tonight in conference play, while South Tama goes to East Marshall.
West Marshall 17, South Hardin 0, 4 innings
ELDORA – Jared Riemenschneider tossed a one-hitter and the West Marshall baseball team took advantage of 12 total walks issued by South Hardin pitching for a 17-0, four-inning romp in Monday’s NICL West Division contest.
Riemenschneider struck out six, did not walk a batter and surrendered only a single to No. 9 hitter Ryan Mossman in the bottom of the third.
The Trojans (3-1, 1-0) scored 13 times in the top of the first and added three more runs in the second and another in the third.
Dylan Petermeier led West Marshall with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, contributing three RBIs. Justin Weitzell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored, while Jared Johnson was 1-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs. Cody Berns was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Nolan Sinning drove in three runs as well.
Sam Shindelar took the loss for South Hardin (0-2, 0-1).
East Marshall 11, AGWSR 4
ACKLEY – Austin Briney struck out nine in the complete-game pitching performance to lead East Marshall to an 11-4 win over host AGWSR in NICL West play.
Briney allowed nine hits but did not walk a batter in the win. AGWSR pitching distributed 17 total walks as the Mustangs needed just five hits to accumulate their season-high 11 runs.
East Marshall (3-7, 2-0) scored five times in both the third and fifth innings. Caleb Benzing was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Luke Svendsen was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Brock Pieters went 1-for-2 with a double and three runs scored.
Clayton Bohner was the losing pitcher for the Cougars (1-2, 0-1).
East Marshall starts a three-game homestand tonight against South Tama, followed by South Hardin on Wednesday and West Marshall Friday.
Don Bosco 5, North Tama 3
GILBERTVILLE – After tying it up in the top of the sixth, the North Tama baseball team couldn’t hang on, dropping a 5-3 decision to Don Bosco in Iowa Star Conference play.
The undefeated Dons (5-0) tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth before keeping the Redhawks off the board in their final at-bat to secure the win. Jacob Wrage took the loss allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits, while striking out seven and walking two in six innings.
North Tama took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, though Don Bosco retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Brandon Zumbach picked up the win in relief tossing 1 and 2/3 innings of no-hit ball, while striking out a pair.
Wrage helped his cause by hitting 2-of-4 at the dish, while Brody Hulme was 2-for-3, with an RBI. Brandon Kaufman chipped in an RBI to finish 1-for-3 on the night and Huston Danker hit 1-of-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Redhawks (6-3) head to the Sumner-Fredericksburg Tournament today and will open play against Turkey Valley starting at 11 a.m.
