PREP BASEBALL: West Marshall whips up on AGWSR; N. Tama splits
STATE CENTER – West Marshall tallied 11 runs in the first inning on its way to a 17-2, four-inning rout of AGWSR in Tuesday’s NICL West Division baseball game.
The Trojans (4-1, 2-0) benefitted from 12 walks and two hit batsmen, needing just six hits to rack up 17 runs and match Monday’s scoring total from their win at South Hardin. West Marshall sent 18 batters to the plate in the first inning and got only one hit yet scored in double-digits.
Jake Pszanka pitched all four innings for West Marshall, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, striking out seven. He also had one of the Trojans’ six hits, drove in two and scored three times.
Justin Weitzell was 1-for-3 with an RBI double and three runs scored, while Jared Riemenschneider was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. Cody Berns singled, scored twice and drove in a run, while Dylan Petermeier pushed three runs across.
Braden Bonewitz had an RBI single for the Cougars (1-3, 0-2).
North Tama splits a pair at Sumner-Fredericksburg
FREDERICKSBURG – The North Tama baseball team couldn’t recover from a slow start against Turkey Valley in the opener of the Sumner-Fredericksburg Tournament on Tuesday.
The Redhawks gave up seven runs in the first three innings and lost 7-4 before bouncing back to claim a 7-0 win over Nashua-Plainfield in the second game.
North Tama (7-4) starter Cameron Hoeg allowed four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss but Brandon Kaufman threw 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief, striking out four.
Brody Hulme led the Redhawks at the plate with two hits, one RBI, one stolen base and a walk, while Caden Stuart also went 2-for-4. Jacob Wrage went 1-for-2 with an RBI, stolen base and a walk, while Joe Kvidera also had a hit, drove in a run and scored once in the loss.
North Tama scored single runs in the first and seventh innings and also had a two-run sixth frame.
In the second game, the Redhawks scored a single run in all seven innings to claim the shutout.
