PREP SOFTBALL: Long strikes out 11 as East Marshall tops Trojans

LE GRAND – Haley Long struck out 11 in a three-hit shutout and had two hits as Class 3A No. 6 East Marshall moved past cross-county rival West Marshall 4-0 in Friday’s NICL West Division clash.

Long surrendered just three singles and two walks in going all seven innings for the win. East Marshall’s offense, meanwhile, scored twice in the first and two more times in the fifth to improve to 8-1 overall (3-1 NICL West).

Paige Miller had three hits, including a double, and scored twice as the catalyst near the top of the Mustangs’ batting order. Katie Roseland and Long both had a double among their two hits, and Taylor Fricke added a two-run double in the fifth inning.

West Marshall hurler Rachel Freland struck out six, walked one and hit one batter. The Trojans’ three hits came from McKenna Hotopp, Heather Skinner and Sadie Simatovich.

Both teams are back in action today in Le Grand in the East Marshall Tournament. West Marshall (1-10, 0-3) meets Aplington-Parkersburg, Marion and Albia starting with a 9 a.m. game, while East Marshall faces Albia, Colo-NESCO and Marion starting at 10:45 a.m.
