Reach Out and Read is a success

Reach Out and Read is a national early literacy program that partners with health care providers who perform well child exams for children 0-5 years old. During these visits, parents are informed about the importance of early literacy and also receive a new book for their child. Books are distributed at 2-month, 6-month, 9-month, 12-month, 15-month, 18-month, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year and 5-year-old well child visits. Recently, we have partnered with Home Care Plus and now provide a book for the family during their home visit shortly after the birth of their child. We also have volunteer board members, many of whom go above and beyond to make this program successful. Studies have shown that children are more successful in school when books are introduced at an early age and children are read to at least once a day, this is especially true for children who come from low-income homes. The Reach Out and Read program in Marshall County distributes approximately 3,800 books a year and relies solely on donations of books from the National ROR program and from monetary donations/contributions from the community. Marshall County has been very fortunate to have so many who have donated funds for books, for the processing of labels that contain information for parents that are adhered to the back of the books, and to our endowment fund.

We would like to thank the following for their generous contributions this last year: The Community Foundation of Marshall County, STEP (Students Teaching and Empowering Philanthropy), Marshalltown Education Association, Noon Kiwanis, Hope United Methodist Church, Great Western Bank, Bruce and Bethany Wirin, Matt and Kim Schryver, Larry and Kathy Beaty, Jerry and Laura Stephens, United Bank and Trust, David and Sheryl Thomas, Shomo-Madsen Insurance, RS Stover Co., Marshall Glass Inc., Mark and Betsy Macke, Michael Macke, Karn Gregoire, M.
