PREP SOFTBALL: Grand slam for Roseland, Mustangs march on
LE GRAND – Katie Roseland’s grand slam punctuated a 10-run explosion for the East Marshall softball team as the Class 3A No. 6-ranked Mustangs marched past Grundy Center, 15-3 in four innings, in Tuesday’s NICL West Division pairing.
It was Roseland’s only hit of the night – and her 3A co-leading fifth home run of the season – as she was walked or plunked in her other three plate appearances.
Callie Roseland, meanwhile, went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Sophia Grego was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and four RBIs.
The Mustangs (12-1, 5-1) rapped out 15 hits in the win, scoring four times in the first inning, 10 more in the third and another in the fourth to finish off the run rule-shortened victory.
Ashley Allen, Haley Long and Kylee Hoskey added two hits apiece for East Marshall, while winning pitcher Mariah Fritz allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Grundy Center got all three of its runs in the third, piecing together four of their hits with a Mustang defensive miscue.
Riley Ackerman took the loss in the circle for Grundy Center (1-7, 1-4), which plays tonight at BCLUW.
East Marshall goes to GMG on Thursday for a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
BCLUW 11, West Marshall 0, 6 innings
STATE CENTER – A 14-hit performance at the plate and a strong outing in the circle Tuesday helped the BCLUW softball team to an 11-0, six-inning win over West Marshall.
Makayla Van Cleave, Kendall Scurr and Sara Sharp all had three hits and Jori Oaks added two more at the plate and that was plenty of support for Nicolette Simpson, who earned the win after holding the Trojans to just two hits in six innings.
Scurr also scored three times, while Sharp scored two runs and added an RBI in the victory. Oaks finished with two runs and an RBI as well as BCLUW improved to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in North Iowa Cedar League West Division play.
Simpson also walked two batters and struck out seven in the win for the Class 2A No. 8 Comets. West Marshall’s Kallie Malloy took the loss in the circle for the Trojans, who dropped their 13th straight game and is now 1-15 on the season.
BCLUW is slated to host Grundy Center tonight in Conrad, while West Marshall will next play in the annual Rose Festival Tournament on Saturday.
