Attorney: Agent on leave seeks to ‘clear his name’
IOWA CITY – An Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation supervisor who has been on leave since May 1 should be cleared of wrongdoing by an internal investigation into his conduct, his attorney says.
Special Agent in Charge Larry Hedlund has been “an outstanding employee” for the Department of Public Safety for 25 years, attorney Tom Duff said in an interview this week. Hedlund was abruptly placed on paid administrative leave after he filed internal complaints about his superiors and another involving a government official, Duff said, but he declined to elaborate.
“Any investigation is going to clear his name and allow him to return to work as an officer,” Duff said. “We think he’ll be completely vindicated by this investigation.”
Department spokesman Lt. Rob Hansen has declined to explain the reason for Hedlund’s leave, calling it a personnel matter that is confidential under Iowa law. He declined comment Thursday but pledged in an email that the department would follow Iowa’s public records law.
