A new queen is crowned
STATE CENTER – There’s new royalty in State Center.
The community crowned its 55th Rose Queen Friday night as part of the 55th Annual Rose Festival going on now through Sunday.
Alyssa Millizer took her reign as 55th Rose Queen during the Queen Coronation in the West Marshall High School Auditorium.
“It feels great,” Millizer said after being crowned. “I honestly didn’t think I’d win.”
State Center Mayor Harlan Quick welcomed people to State Center and said he is extremely proud of all of the young people State Center has produced.
“I’m especially proud of these five ladies vying for queen,” Quick said.
The coronation was moved from the stage at the Rose Garden for the second straight year because of rain that passed through the central Iowa Friday night.
A Little Miss Rose Bud and, new this year, Little Mr. Rose Bud were also crowned Friday night. Brandon Wiley was crowned Little Mr. Rose Bud and Aurora Tiller was crowned Little Miss Rose Bud. The winners were chosen by drawing names out of a basket.
“It’s fun and exciting,” Wiley said.
“I’m very, very happy because my best friend picked me,” Tiller said.
Millizer said after winning, she is now ready to assume her duties as queen and believes it’s her responsibility to act as a leader.
“I think I’ll serve as a leader who will set up things for people to follow,” she said.
The 55th Annual Rose Festival continues through this weekend with the parade planned for 10 a.m. Saturday and fireworks to be lit off Saturday night.
