PREP BASEBALL: Pieters’ homer propels Mustangs to win
ELDORA – East Marshall’s offense finally found its footing after falling behind South Hardin, and the Mustangs took a convincing 9-2 lead before rain washed out the final two innings of their NICL West Division baseball game Friday night.
East Marshall won after rain and lightning forced the two teams off the diamond after five full innings of play, making it an official game.
Brock Pieters put East Marshall in front to stay with his three-run home run in the top of the fourth as a part of the Mustangs’ six-run eruption.
Nick Long pitched all five inings for the Mustangs (6-11, 5-2), allowing two earned runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
South Hardin (0-7, 0-6) struck for solo runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead, but the Mustangs bounced back for six runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth against Tiger sophomore David Shindelar.
Shindelar surrendered nine earned runs on seven hits and eight walks, striking out five.
Pieters finished 2-for-3 at the plate, as did Nate DeBondt. DeBondt had a double, scored a run and drove in three.
Josh Wilson had a double, while Caleb Benzing and Long both went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Benzing also drove in a run. Ryan Puumala also had a single.
Sam Shindelar was 2-for-2 at the plate to lead South Hardin. David Shindelar doubled and scored, while Blake Drury, Holden Hillmer and Bridger Lawrence also singled.
South Hardin plays today in the Times-Citizen Invite in Iowa Falls, while East Marshall is off until Monday’s home game against BCLUW.
BCLUW 8-11, Grundy Center 1-0
BEAMAN – Tyler Lutes struck out 13 and Isaac Novak homered in the opening game of BCLUW’s NICL West Division sweep of Grundy Center here on Friday night.
Lutes pitched the Comets to an 8-1 victory in the opener, running his hitless innings streak to 12 before Ryon Appel’s single interrupted the no-hitter with one out in the sixth. Lutes allowed four walks and one unearned run in the seventh, as back-to-back walks were followed by a two-out error.
Novak’s two-run home run came as a part of the Comets’ three-run first against Jordan Clapp, who took the loss. Lutes also had a double and a triple at the plate, and Cole Silver had two singles.
The nightcap only went five innings as BCLUW prevailed 11-0. Conner Ubben surrendered just two hits in the win, walking one and striking out five.
Novak finished 3-for-3 while Lutes had a two-run triple and four total RBIs. Lane Caster and Taylor Sams both doubled, while Silver had a two-run single. Lucas McLean had a hit in both games, too.
Grundy Center left the bases loaded in the second after Clapp led off with a hit. Austin Burroughs walked and Bryce Moats reached on a bunt single, but the Spartans could not scratch out a run. Those were the Spartans’ only baserunners in the game.
Grant Weldon took the loss on the mound for Grundy Center, which plays today in West Marshall’s Rose Festival Tournament. The Spartans face PCM in the 1 p.m. game.
BCLUW (4-5, 3-4) is off until Monday, going to Gilman for an NICL West contest against East Marshall.
