PREP SOFTBALL: Mustang softball goes deep to beat STC, 4-3

LE GRAND – Not many Class 3A softball teams play home run derby better than East Marshall.

The Mustangs met South Tama’s challenge on Wednesday night, winning a game that consisted of three two-run homers for a 4-3 NICL West Division victory.

Taylor Fricke’s two-run shot gave the 3A No. 4-ranked Mustangs (16-3, 7-2) a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, and Katie Roseland’s two-run blast made it 4-0 in the fifth. Roseland, 3A’s leader with nine home runs, is now tied for third in all of Iowa in that statistical category.

The surprisingly limited amount of offense was just enough for Mariah Fritz, who surrendered a two-run shot to South Tama’s Jade Rohach in the top of the sixth – her first of the year. Two of East Marshall’s five errors allowed another STC runner to cross home to make it a 4-3 game.

Fritz finished with eight strikeouts in the win, walking none while surrendering seven hits. She also finished 2-for-3 at the plate, as did Roseland. Callie Roseland, Kylee Hoskey, Sophia Grego and Madisen Hinegardner each added singles for East Marshall.

Riley Craun led South Tama (6-12, 3-5) with two hits and scored on Rohach’s home run. Sam Holtz took the pitching loss, striking out eight while walking one.

The two teams meet again tonight in Tama.

BCLUW 4, Charles City 1

CHARLES CITY – BCLUW defeated Charles City for the second time this season, handing the host Comets a 4-1 defeat on Wednesday night.

Olivia Callaway struck out eight and walked none, allowing just three hits from the pitching circle for BCLUW (15-5).

Sarah McCoy homered for the second game in a row and added a triple to finish with three RBIs. Kendall Scurr was 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, and Mallory Vawter was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Sara Sharp also singled and scored for BCLUW, which plays tonight at Gladbrook-Reinbeck in NICL West Division action.
