Movies in the Park return June 29

Family-friendly favorites will be the lineup this summer as the popular Movies in the Park return to the Sixth Street softball complex in Marshalltown.

The event started last year by Parks and Recreation will return for three Saturday nights this summer.

“We had a great response with the movies that we did last year,” said Chad Weir, recreation superintendent with Parks and Recreation. “We got a lot of compliments for providing opportunities to have something for families to do.”

The 1993 family drama “Free Willy” leads off the second season of the outdoor movies with a June 29 screening.

The movies are free and open to the public and begin at dusk. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or blanket and concessions will be for sale.

The other movies this summer are the animated feature “Brave” on July 20 and the inspiring horse film “Secretariat” on Aug. 17.

“We’re excited about the slate of movies we have this summer,” Weir said. “We keep the family theme in mind.”

Parks and Recreation has purchased equipment to show the films this year, instead of borrowing it, so the plan is to show movies during the summer in the park for years to come.

Weir said visitors shouldn’t expect the highest quality picture or sound, but can expect a unique experience.

“It’s the experience of sitting outside under the stars watching a fun movie,” Weir said.

Inclement weather would force the cancellation of the screenings, Weir said.
