Bobcats extend win streak to 3

URBANDALE – A five-run third inning was all the Marshalltown softball team needed to beat Urbandale on Tuesday.

The Bobcats collected five of their eight hits in the third inning, plated five runs and beat the J-Hawks 5-2 in a CIC non-conference game.

“We played really well tonight,” MHS coach Jeff Lamb said. “It’s defintely a good way for us to play. We did a lot of good things. We played good defense and pitched it well. We could have hit it better, but that five-run inning was big for us.”

Emily DeVenney and Taylor Wagner started the third inning with back-to-back singles and then everyone was safe on Madi Bellile’s suicide bunt attempt that plated DeVenney at home.

Wagner then scored on Cassidy Blackford’s RBI bunt single and Quinn Goodman’s two-run double brought in Bellile and Blackford. Goodman, who had two hits in the game, was brought home following Kaley Mead’s RBI double.

Lauren Mazour earned the win in the circle for the Bobcats as she allowed one earned run on six hits. She fanned four and walked two.

Urbandale (10-15) scored one run in the second and added another run in the third.

Marshalltown (11-14) is back in action tonight at the MHS diamond in a doubleheader against Southeast Polk (18-11) at 6 p.m. The Bobcats have won three straight games and four of their last five, while Southeast Polk will look for its third straight win after taking two at Ankeny on Monday. The Rams have won five of six.

The Bobcats then make up their doubleheader at Fort Dodge on Thursday.
