PREP BASEBALL: Early runs lead Trojans past rival Spartans
STATE CENTER – Jared Riemenschneider had three hits and Jared Johnson and Justin Weitzell each had two hits and two RBIs as the West Marshall baseball team stayed unbeaten in North Iowa Cedar League West Division play Tuesday with a 10-6 victory over Grundy Center.
The Trojans struck for nine of their 10 runs in the first three innings, scoring two in the first, three in the second and four in the third and improved to 10-0 in NICL West play.
All six runs for the Spartans came in the third inning. Grundy Center dropped to 3-9 in conference play.
Dylan Petermeier started and threw the first 2 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, four walks and six earned runs while striking out five. Ross Randall was awarded the win after he surrendered just two hits and struck out two in 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Grundy Center’s Austin Burroughs took the loss.
Riemenschneider went 3-for-4 with two runs and Weitzell tripled and was 2-for-4 in helping the Trojans (14-3) win their sixth straight game. West Marshall’s last loss came to PCM in the Rose Festival Tournament.
Petermeier had two RBIs at the plate for West Marshall, while Alex Billman’s two-run single put the Trojans ahead for good.
Ryon Appel, Elliott Eggleston and Braiden Burrows all had two hits to lead the Spartans’ offense.
West Marshall will host arch nemesis East Marshall, 11-11, 10-2) in a big NICL West showdown tonight and will travel to BCLUW on Thursday.
Grundy Center will host East Marshall on Friday. That varsity only game will begin at 7 p.m.
