East Marshall 10, South Hardin 0, 5 innings
ELDORA – The East Marshall softball team kept its conference championship hopes alive, staying within one game of AGWSR with a 10-0, five-inning whitewashing of South Hardin on Wednesday night.
Just a 2-0 Mustang victory in their first meeting, East Marshall (21-3, 10-2) picked up its seventh straight win in convincing fashion. Mariah Fritz tossed a one-hitter, striking out nine while walking none, and the Class 3A No. 4-ranked Mustangs dropped a 10-spot on the Tigers in the top of the third.
East Marshall sent 15 hitters to the plate in the third, with eight in a row reaching safely and scoring. South Hardin (5-13, 4-8) helped out with three errors and one walk, and the Mustangs had six hits in the frame. Five of the runs came with two outs.
Fritz led her team with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while five others – Paige Miller, Katie Roseland, Taylor Fricke, Ashley Allen and Sophia Grego – each had a hit. Fricke had an RBI double, Roseland drove in two runs while Grego scored twice.
Kassidy Rewoldt had South Hardin’s lone single. Alaina Lake took the loss, allowing nine runs – just three earned – in 2 2/3 innings. She allowed five hits and struck out five, walking none.
South Tama 13, Grinnell 10
GRINNELL – Four consecutive two-out hits for South Tama got the Trojans three runs in the top of the eighth inning and a 13-10 victory over Grinnell.
The victory avenged a 6-3 loss to the Tigers (2-17) earlier this season, which was Grinnell’s first win of the summer.
South Tama (8-17) totaled 16 hits but committed 10 errors, helping Grinnell hang around. The Trojans had a 10-7 lead before the Tigers scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to tie it up.
Sam Holtz gave up 10 hits and six walks, striking out four in the win. Only two runs were earned.
Belle Tyynismaa walked leading off the eighth and took second on a sacrifice bunt, but was still there after the second out. Jade Rohach drove her in with a single, Holtz plated Rohach with a double, and back-to-back singles by Hailee Weiss and Dani Stubbs drove courtesy runner Naomi Hoskey.
Rohach and Holtz both finished with four RBIs. Rohach, Stubbs and Weiss each had three hits, Holtz, Tori Appelgate and Riley Craun had two hits apiece, and Trisha Walz added a double.
