PREP SOFTBALL: North Tama takes two in unconventional doubleheader

TRAER – Making short work of Northeast Hamilton in the opener, the North Tama baseball team did enough in the nightcap to earn a pair of wins Thursday.

Facing Northeast Hamilton in a make-up game to start the twin bill, the Redhawks (20-6, 10-2) cruised to a 14-4 victory in five innings, before claiming the second game 4-1 over Hudson.

North Tama tallied six runs in the first and four in the fourth to gain an early cushion over the Trojans. Brent Billerbeck batted 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and 3 RBIs, while Clayton Blocker went 1-of-2, scored once and plated three runs. Caden Stuart added three runs with a 2-for-3 outing and Huston Danker supplied two doubles, a run and an RBI on a 2-for-4 showing as the home team cranked out 13 hits and pounced on five Trojan errors.

Brandon Kaufmann fanned 10 batters in the win allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. Blocker threw the final frame of relief allowing two runs on one hit with a strikeout.

Jacob Wrage helped his cause in the second game batting 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to complement a complete game, one-run effort on the hill. Wrage gave up four hits, struck out six and walked four as the Redhawks took a 1-0 lead in the first before stretching it to 3-0 in the fourth.

North Tama added an insurance run in the sixth, before the Pirates plated one in the seventh. Kaufmann provided an RBI and double in a 1-for-4 outing, while Dalton Hulme (2-for-4) and Danker (2-for-3) also contributed.

The Redhawks face Colo-NESCO in Zearing today at 5 p.m.
