Long’s one-hitter leads Mustangs to win

DENVER – East Marshall junior Haley Long allowed just one hit and the Mustang bats provided plenty of offense during a 5-0 win over Denver on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

It was the 11th straight win for the Mustangs, who have allowed just five runs in their last five games.

Long (14-1) struck out nine and walked three in the complete-game victory, while Taylor Fricke and Paige Miller each had three hits at the plate. Miller came into the game hitting .500 at the plate, and Fricke was second on the team with a .434 batting average.

Class 3A No. 4 East Marshall (25-3) finished with nine hits in the game and pulled away with three runs in the fourth inning. The Mustangs also scored single runs in the first and sixth frames.

The Mustangs will next face Ames on Saturday in Le Grand. The doubleheader begins at noon.


JESUP Putting a ranked foe on upset alert, the South Tama County softball team couldn’t quite close the deal in an 8-7 loss to Class 2A No. 10 Jesup Tuesday.

The J-Hawks rallied from a 7-3 deficit with five runs in the seventh including three with two outs. Sam Holtz went the distance allowing eight runs (two earned) on seven hits as the home team took advantage of five errors. Holtz walked three and struck out two in the loss, while driving in a pair of runs at the plate.

Riley Craun, Jade Rohach and Dani Stubbs each tallied a pair of hits for STC (9-19) including two doubles from Stubbs. The Trojans rebounded from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Jesup (23-10) added a run in the bottom of the sixth before their breakthrough in the seventh.

STC hosts West Marshall in an NICL West doubleheader tonight starting at 6 p.m.
