Jack V. Smith, 90, of Marshalltown, IA passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Grandview Heights Nursing and Rehab, in Marshalltown.
Public graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 8, 2013 at the Main St. Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes, in Marshalltown. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established. Jack was born May 15, 1923 to Joseph Hugh and Gladys Marie Smith in Middlebourne,West Virginia. He is a 1942 graduate of Marshalltown High School. Jack married his childhood sweetheart, Norma Lee Lincoln in 1948. They were happily married for 65 years. Jack lead by example the meaning of patriotism. He enlisted in the United States Navy in March of 1943. He served as a water tender second class during World War II. He was stationed on the heavy cruiser the USS Chester CA-27. After the attack on Pearl Harbor Jack participated in the American Task Force to strike back at Japan near the Marshall Islands. The ship participated in operations in Northern Japan and was credited with 33 bombardments during WWII. Jack was involved in the operations in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, Wake and Marcus Island, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Battles of the Coral Sea, the Philippines, Aleutians, Matsurua Islands, Paramushiro and the Battle of Okinawa. After his service to the Navy, he became an engineer for Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway on July 17, 1947. He later worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railway eventually retiring on June 28, 1983. He was a longtime member of the UTU (United Transportation Union). All together he was with the railroad for 36 years. We will fondly remember his coveralls and the whistle call “Shave and a Haircut”. Jack had many hobbies that included table tennis, tennis and golf. He was a longtime member of the Legion Golf Course. When we hear the sound of a railroad engine blowing its horn, or think of him as a soldier, or enjoy a game of golf, we will hold dear to our hearts his jokes, stories and many happy memories.
Jack will be missed by his wife, Norma Smith of Marshalltown, IA; his children, Judy (Larry) O’Neal and Terry (Becky) Smith all of Marshalltown, IA; his daughter-in-law, Janine Smith of Marshalltown, IA; his grandchildren, Angie (Mike) Lovell, Ryan (Jen) O’Neal, Jennifer (Mike) Price, Emily (Brian) Andersen and Joseph W. Smith; his great-grandchildren, Lexie McKown, Nicholas Price, Katie Price, Madalyn Andersen, Lindsay Andersen, Brooke Andersen, Lauren O’Neal and Hunter Riedl and his brother-in-law, Brice Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John Smith.
