PREP SOFTBALL: Trojans win Tama County clash behind late surge

TAMA – Sam Holtz and Kallie Hala combined on a two-hitter and the South Tama softball team broke a 1-all tie with solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 3-1 victory over North Tama in Monday’s regular-season finale.

Tori Appelgate’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth drove in Belle Tyynismaa, who had singled and stolen second, as the tie-breaking run. Madison Baack’s run-scoring double in the sixth gave STC some added cushion.

Hailee Weiss led the Trojans (11-20) with two hits, including a triple, while Trisha Walz also singled and scored in the win.

Holtz struck out five over four innings, allowing one hit and one walk, while Hala earned the win in relief as she surrendered a hit and a walk in three frames.

Madison Howard took the loss, pitching three innings in relief of Emma Knoop for North Tama (16-10).

Both teams open postseason play their next time out. South Tama plays tonight against Union Community in La Porte City, and North Tama hosts either South Hamilton or Colfax-Mingo on Wednesday in Traer.
