PREP BASEBALL: Regular season ends in defeat for Trojans, GMG

LA PORTE CITY – The West Marshall baseball team stranded 13 runners on base and suffered defeat in its regular-season finale Thursday, falling 10-4 to Union Community.

The Trojans (20-9) came up with just five hits, but managed to tie the game at 3-all with two runs in the top of the fifth. Union (13-15) responded with six runs in the home half, regaining the lead for good.

Garrett Goodwin went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Trojan bats. Nolan Sinning and Matt Van Metre both had run-scoring doubles.

Dylan Petermeier took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs (six earned) over 4 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits, struck out two and walked two.

Union pitchers Alex Barz and Bo Bader combined to strike out 11. Brady Driscol was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored to lead the Knights.

West Marshall opens Class 2A District 13 play on Tuesday night in Alleman, facing the winner of Saturday’s first-round pairing between East Marshall and CMB.

Clarksville 12, GMG 2

GREEN MOUNTAIN – GMG could muster only two hits in its regular-season finale as Clarksville took a 12-2 triumph from the Wolverines on Thursday night.

Bridger Claassen doubled and scored GMG’s tying run in the second inning on a grounder off the bat of Josh Raymond. Austin Vaughn scored on an RBI by Brandon Weitzell in the fifth, but by that time the Indians (10-7) had taken a 9-2 lead.

Noah Thurston had GMG’s only other hit. Claassen took the loss on the mound for the Wolverines (5-18), allowing nine runs – four earned – on five hits, four walks and two strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

GMG opens the postseason Tuesday night in Traer, taking on North Tama at 7 p.m.

North Tama 7, Denver 2

TRAER – Brody Hulme scattered eight hits over a complete-game performance on the mound, helping North Tama snap its season-worst three-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over Denver in Thursday’s regular-season finale.

Hulme struck out five and walked two, allowing one earned run to improve to 6-1 for the year.

Brent Billerbeck went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs scored, while Caden Stuart finished 3-for-3 with an RBI. Huston Danker was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, and Clayton Blocker contributed a two-run single.

The Redhawks (25-10) open Class 1A District 11 play at home Tuesday, facing GMG in the 7 p.m. contest. Meskwaki Settlement and Iowa Valley play in the 5 p.m. contest in Traer.
