SPORTS SHORTS: Marshalltown man aces Legion’s 18th
Cody Ealy of Marshalltown scored a hole-in-one on Saturday, acing the finishing 18th hole with his 6-iron at the American Legion Golf Course.
Ealy’s shot on the 156-yard hole was witnessed by Gary Zobel and Heather Ealy.

UNION – The seventh annual Buster Nyce Memorial Junior Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 2 in conjunction with the Union Tar Heel Days.
The 10 a.m. shotgun tournament is for all golfers 18 and under, with four age divisions: 9-and-under, 10-12, 13-14, and 15-18.
Golfers are asked to pre-register by contacting the South Hardin Recreation Area at (641) 486-2335 or event coordinator Dianna Haywood at (641) 858-3077. Check-in the day of the tournament will be from 8:30-9:45 a.m.
Former Royals earn academic honor
DES MOINES – Two former area preps were honored with selection to the Midwest Collegiate Conference’s academic all-conference team.
Colo-NESCO graduates Travis Guy and Brandon Eley, both members of the AIB College of Business men’s basketball team, were named to the MCC academic team.
Athletes are nominated by their schools and must have completed a minimum of two terms at their current school and have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.
Eley, a sophomore from Zearing, averaged an MCC-leading 18.8 points per game to gain all-conference first-team selection this past season. He also led the league in steals and was fifth in rebounding.
Guy, a junior from Colo, came off the bench to play in all 31 games. He averaged 3 points per game for the Eagles, who finished the season 1-30.
