All-CIC 2nd-team honor for Hillygus

Marshalltown senior Hunter Hillygus earned second-team selection to the first-ever all-Central Iowa Conference baseball team, the league’s coaches announced recently.

Hillygus was the second-team selection at first base after leading the Bobcats offensively with a .391 batting average, 14 doubles, two home runs and 35 RBIs. The senior right-hander was the only Bobcat selected to either of the first or second 13-player all-CIC teams.

Hillygus was not, however, named to the all-CIC Northern Division first team, but two of his classmates were. Blake Judkins was selected as a first-team pitcher, while Ryan Mitchell was named a first-team infielder.

Judkins was Marshalltown’s third-leading hitter, batting .355 with 10 doubles, two triples and 25 RBIs. The right-hander also went 6-5 on the mound with a 3.52 earned run average, striking out 73 batters over 69 2/3 innings pitched.

Mitchell batted .361 and scored a team-leading 32 runs with 15 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.

Hillygus was one of three second-team selections for Marshalltown, joined by junior pitcher Dylan Diveney and sophomore infielder Grant Thimesch.

Honorable mention selection went to seniors Tyler Moranville and Connor Ruddick, junior Austin Sowers, and sophomores Michael Schrempf and Colton Hanke.

Marshalltown finished third in a tight race for the Northern Division title, going 6-6 in league play with Fort Dodge (8-4) and Ames (7-5) edging the Bobcats for the top spot. MHS went 17-25 this season.
