Wellsburg man charged with third-degree sexual abuse
A Wellsburg man faces third-degree sexual abuse charges following an investigation in Grundy County.
Robert Lavelle, 49, was arrested Friday night, according to a Grundy County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Sheriff Rick Penning said the victim was underage, but that was all he could say because the court file is sealed to protect the victim’s identity.
“Once it’s an underage victim they seal the file,” he said.
Lavelle is being held in the Grundy County Jail on $100,000 bond.
According to online court records, Lavelle has had minor run-ins with the law before.
In 2006, Grundy Center police arrested Lavelle on an interference with official acts charge. A judge sentenced Lavelle to 30 days in jail.
Third-degree sexual abuse is a class C felony, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Penning said the incident remains under investigation.
