SPORTS SHORTS: Kids at Kinnick day set for Aug. 17

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa football team will stage its annual “Kids at Kinnick” day Aug. 17 at Kinnick Stadium.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with practice beginning at 5 p.m. Student-athletes will sign autographs in front of the west and south stands following the team’s approximate two-hour practice. Fans will have access to only the south and west grandstands during the practice session.

The UI Athletics Office is selling single-game tickets for Iowa’s seven home games. There is a limit of four tickets per order for Iowa’s three non-conference home games and a limit of two tickets per order for the four Big Ten Conference games in Kinnick Stadium.

Tickets maybe be purchased online at or by phone at 1-800-IA-HAWKS. The UI Athletics Ticket Office, located in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

T.C.’s tailgate set for Jasper Winery

CEDAR FALLS – The University of Northern Iowa has announced that T.C.’s Tailgate at Jasper Winery in Des Moines will take place Aug. 15 from 6-9 p.m. The event is hosted by the Northern Iowa Alumni Association and the Panther Scholarship Club.

Adults 21 and over cost $10, while 20 and under adults cost $5 and children 5 and under are free to attend.

The Jasper Winery is located at 2400 George Flagg Parkway in Des Moines. Panther fans in attendance will have the chance to meet Northern Iowa President Bill Ruud and his wife Judy. Fan also can mingle with the UNI coaches and staff while enoying food, drinks and prizes. Johnny’s Hall of Fame and The Other Place will provide the food for the evening.

UNI apparel from the bookstore will be available to purchase along with a raffle for exclusive Panther memorabilia.

UNI women’s hoops to host golf event

CEDAR FALLS – The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team will host the 2013 UNI Women’s Basketball Annual Golf Gig on Aug. 24 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

The four-person best shot event begins at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. The event will include flight gifts, pin prizes and a raffle. Each group will be teamed with a UNI women’s basketball player with all proceeds from the day’s festivities directly benefiting UNI women’s basketball.

The event is $75 per person, which includes green fees, a cart, a t-shirt and dinner. Attendees can also sponsor a hole on the course for $100 per hole or a team that is competing for $350 per team.
