Three candidates file for re-election for college board

This year’s Iowa Valley Community College District board election will be a carbon copy of the election held in 2009.

The very same candidates are up for the three open positions on the board for the Sept. 10 election, including Delbert Kellogg, Deb Jones and Yvonne Mallory.

Jones, of Clemons, has served on the board for five years and said it’s an enjoyable team to work with.

“I’ve learned so much from them and they are very passionate about education,” Jones said.

Jones said she wants to continue on the board to see some of the projects to completion.

“We’ve got a lot of projects going on right now that I want to see through,” Jones said.

Jones said she has a lot of respect for the Iowa Valley leaders and how they care about the college and the taxpayers.

Delbert Kellogg, of rural Marshalltown, is running for his fourth term on the board.

“It’s been a real joy and I have a passion for youth and young students,” Kellogg said. “We are really fortunate to have Dr. (Chris) Duree as our chancellor and his staff have been excellent to work with.”

Kellogg said he does have concerns with financial losses at the Orpheum Theater and with the way the organic farm is being run at the college.

Mallory, of Toledo, has served for 13 years on the board and is the current vice president.

“Education has always been my passion,” Mallory said. “It’s always been my main area of interest.”

Mallory said she is thrilled the pilot Education and Training Center will be coming to Tama this fall which will offer GED, English as a Second Language classes and job training.

“I’ve been working over 10 years to make this happen,” Mallory said.

She said the college district is in a “marvelous position” overall with the leadership in place and the efforts toward quality improvement.

The terms are four years for college board members, who are unpaid volunteers. Members of the board represent seven different districts in the Iowa Valley area and oversee Marshalltown Community College, Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and Iowa Valley Grinnell.
