Clement comes through in extras for Red Wings

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Breaking out of his slump in the biggest way, Marshalltown native Jeff Clement delivered at the most opportune time Saturday.

Connecting for a two-out grand slam in the 10th inning and a walk-off RBI double in the 12th, Clement propelled the Rochester Red Wings past the Syracuse Chiefs, 7-6, in 12 innings at Frontier Field.

Hitting just 3-for-29 (.103) in his last nine games, Clement had his first two-hit game since June 27th, which was also the last time he homered. He crushed his 14th round-tripper down the right-field line to complete a five-run rally for the Red Wings, which trailed 6-1 after surrendering five runs in the top of the 10th.

In his next at-bat, the former Bobcat drove in the game-winning run with a double to the right-field corner in the 12th, raising his RBI total to 54 on the season.

Rochester (63-53) picked up its seventh straight home win, extending its first-place lead to three games over the Pawtucket PawSox (59-55) in the International League North Division.

The Red Wings complete the two-game set with Syracuse (51-62) today at 12:05 p.m. Clement is currently second on the squad in homers, RBIs and doubles (16).
