Trial set in murder case

Trial has been set for Oct. 22 in the murder case against Mathew John Irving.

Irving, 40, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rebecca Hall last month. Irving has pleaded not guilty.

According to a police report, Irving and Hall, 55 when she died, had an ongoing argument about Hall telling others about Irving having an affair. The two met at Hall’s house in Marshalltown around 10:30 p.m. July 13 and then drove in Hall’s van to a park east of town.

There the two had sex and later began to argue again. During the exchange, Irving allegedly choked Hall to death. The report states that he told friends and relatives that he’d killed Hall and during an initial court appearance told Judge Kim Riley, “I didn’t really mean to kill her.”

If convicted, Irving faces life in prison without parole.
