Syrup spilling vandals remain at large
Police suspect vandals released roughly 500 gallons of a syrup-based liquid onto a city street Tuesday night in Marshalltown.
Ben’s Tire, located at the corner of Washington and Second streets, housed a large tank containing Rim Guard, a liquid added to tires used to increase traction and pulling power in tractors and other farm implements. The product is nontoxic and biodegradable.
Police say that around 9:45 p.m., someone removed a chain that secured the tank, enabling them to open a spout that let the liquid spill onto the ground. The intersection was temporarily closed as fire crews covered the ground with sand to soak up the sticky substance.
Ben’s Tire owner Kelcy Benscoter said Tuesday that this is the second time someone has broken into the tank.
Police have no suspects and are considering this a case of vandalism since the substance has little resale value.
