Marie A. Farni, 79
Marie A. Farni, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 6 days.
Marie Alice Backous was born on August 30, 1933 to Harold and Edna Marie Shearer Backous. She attended grade school in Shipley and continued her education in the Ames schools before staying home to help with the family after a tragic home fire took their home on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1942, taking the lives of her father, Harold and grandfather, Arthur Backous. Prior to living on the farm west of Shipley, on Skunk River, The Backous family had lived in the vicinity of Peoria City, southeast of Maxwell.
On March 24, 1951, Marie A. Backous was united in marriage to Marvin R. Farni in Nevada. Unto this union 3 children were born, Douglas Robert, Debra Lynn and David Brian. Marvin and Marie set up their home in Marshalltown where Marvin worked with his brother Elmer and later started Farni Brothers Construction, while Marie was a homemaker and enjoyed her leisure time bowling on a league which took numerous awards and qualified for nationals.
In 1978, Marvin and Marie moved to Ames, before relocating to Glendale, Arizona, where they resided until 2004. While in Arizona, Marvin continued his construction services, and Marie worked in housekeeping.
Wanting to be closer to their family, Marvin and Marie returned to Ames in 2004.
Marie loved to cook for her family. Although in later years she was unable to do a lot of cooking, she continued her searching for good recipes. She always looked forward to a good visit at their home or an invite to Marshalltown for Roberts barbeque, to Huxley to see sister Lois, or to sister Shirley and Larry’s, wherever the venture, she was ready to go. Marie had a “sweet tooth” that only grew with age. She always looked forward to the “treats” Roxanne would bring or send to her to keep her sweet tooth happy. Marie loved her TV. She was always ready for a good western and Funniest Home Video show, or watching Phil Mickelson play golf.
In Oct. 2012, due to declining health, Marvin and Marie moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, where she resided until her death.
Survivors include son, Doug Farni, of Ames; daughter, Deb (Robert) Brown of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Nicole Brown of Boston, Mass., Ryan Brown and fiance Jordan Johnson of Clear Water, Florida, and Garrett Farni of Ames; sisters, Lois Fjelland of Huxley; Shirley (Larry) Evans, of Ames and Dianna Cable of Rogers, Arkansas; special friend, Roxanne Nielsen, nieces and nephews and grand-dog, Brandy Sue.
