ISU volleyball begins season ranked 15th

AMES – With three preseason all-Big 12 selections, the Iowa State volleyball team has already made news heading into the 2013 season.

More good news rolled in Thursday when the Cyclones came in at No. 15 in the Volleyball Magazine Top 20 preseason poll. ISU had already been ranked 15th a week ago by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. It was the sixth straight time the Cyclones have been picked in a preseason poll.

Iowa State – which will likely be led by preseason all-Big 12 selections Mackenzie Bigbee, Kristen Hahn and Victoria Hurtt – were picked to finish second in the Big 12, trailing only preseason No. 1 and defending national champion Texas. Another Big 12 rival – Kansas – enters the season with a preseason ranking of 20th. The 2013 schedule also features a matchup with former league rival Nebraska, which is No. 8 in the preseason poll, as well as San Diego and Oklahoma, who are both receiving votes.

Iowa State’s annual Cardinal and Gold scrimmage is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones will be hosting “chalk talk” before the game so fans are encouraged to come early. The event will start at 11:30 a.m.

The season opener will be Aug. 30 in the North Dakota Classic. The Cyclones face South Dakota State at 11 a.m.
