MCC netters finish 1-2 at road tourney

BEATRICE, Neb. – The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team got off to a fast start at the RKP Invite on Saturday but then dropped two five-set matches to go 1-2 on the day.

The Tigers opened the season with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-14 sweep against McCook Community College but ended the day with losses to host Southeast Community College and Northeast Community College.

“I thought we were very competitive throughout the entire day,” MCC coach Chris Brees said. “We struggled to close at the end but that will come with maturity.”

NCC defeated MCC 27-25, 19-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-7 and Southeast handed Marshalltown a 15-25, 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11 loss in the second match of the day.

The Tigers easily defeated the Indians to open the tournament. Freshman Meghann Cole led MCC with 11 kills and three aces, while sophomore libero Ashley Salgado recorded a team-high 42 digs.

Cole paced the Tigers with 13 kills against Southeast, while freshman Sam Hinrichs added 31 assists and five blocks. Marshalltown native Miranda Smith had 10 kills and five blocks in the loss.

Salgado. who had 147 digs on the day, recorded 60 digs against Northeast to lead the Tiger defense, while Cole once again led the offense with 13 kills. Sophomore Katelyn Yauslin scored 10 kills as well.

“We were very sound on the defensive end today,” Brees said. “Our defense kept us in the games.”

Marshalltown will next play its first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference match of the season Monday when the Tigers hit the road to face Clinton Community College at 7:30 p.m.
