The Business: The 9th Street Gallery and Frame has been known for custom framing for more than 30 years. That tradition will continue under Burkemper, who recently celebrated her second month anniversary as owner. However, she is updating systems and investing in new technology to enhance the final product and decrease turn around time. Limited edition prints and gift items are also available. Burkemper said the business will eventually move from holding inventory to serve as a resource in assisting customers search for a type of art or artist. The Internet has changed the market, and accordingly, the business will take advantage of resources to research and locate artwork sources.
Unique Features: The business specializes in custom work and special orders. No two jobs are the same, and Burkemper knows how to analyze projects, which result in the best outcome for the customer.
Why Central Iowa? “My husband came to central Iowa for a job opportunity,” Burkemper said. “I followed a short time later. The longer we stay, the more we take advantage of the community’s resources: schools, cultural events, library, aquatic center and so on. Of course, the friends we have made over the years has made Marshalltown a place to call home. We have lived in smaller and larger communities. We feel we have the best of both worlds. There is always enough to do and if we want to leave town -which we do less and less – we are centrally located from a number of different cities.”
