Schrempf, Johnson guide Bobcats to 2nd at Mason City

MASON CITY – Tournament host Mason City emerged marginally depper than the Marshalltown boys’ golf team on Monday night, edging the Bobcats 325-332 for the top spot at the Mohawks’ seven-team Mark Mann Invitational.

Mason City, Marshalltwon and third-place Newton (338) each accounted for two of the top six individual finishers. The Mohawks’ Jared Rowe paced the field with a 3-over-par round of 75, Newton’s Devin Shores was runner-up with a 76, and Marshalltown junior Michael Schrempf shot a 78 for third.

Bobcat senior Connor Johnson won a cardback to break a tie with Newton’s Derek Damman for fourth place with rounds of 80, and Mason City’s David Mejia completed the top six with his 82.

The Mohawks had just a little better backing than the Bobcats, with Jordan Rowe shooting 83 and both Ben Butler and Alex Noto carding 85s to collect the team title.

Marshalltown’s counting scores included Sam Weatherman’s 85 and Beau Ragland’s 89 in his first-ever varsity meet. Brant McKibben shot 91 and Brandin Chaloupek finished in with a 93 to round out the Bobcat lineup.

“Michael and Connor both had strong rounds to put us in contention for the team title,” said MHS coach Lucas Johnson. “The heat, long rough and gusty winds made for a tough day on the course, but our guys battled well. The fact we didn’t have all our guys play their best and still almost came out on top bodes well for the road ahead.”

The Bobcats do in fact play on the road their next time out – 10 days later. Marshalltown’s third of six straight away meets sends it to the Newton Invitational on Sept. 5 at Westwood Golf Course.
