SPORTS SHORT: MHS underclassmen compete at SEP

RUNNELLS – Marshalltown’s Tony Smith paced the freshman/sophomore boys cross country team to a fifth place finish (104 points) at the Southeast Polk Invitational Tuesday.

Smith claimed eighth in 20 minutes, 42 seconds at the Metro Waste Field Station. Fellow sophomore Jose Palmerez placed 15th in 21:43 and freshman Nick Summer took 24th in 23:08.

Sophomore Ellyn Boland sparked the freshman/sophomore girls squad to fifth with 121 points. Boland crossed the finish in 18:26 to garner 12th, while freshmen Ashley Macbeth (19:13) and Aspen Chadderdon (20:43) placed 17th and 25th respectively.
