PREP VOLLEYBALL: South Hardin survives five-setter with West Marshall

ELDORA – South Hardin staved off defeat in the fourth set to win the fifth decisively, edging West Marshall in Tuesday’s NICL West Division volleyball opener, 13-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-19, 15-6.

No statistics were available for the host Tigers, who improved to 2-4 overall.

West Marshall was led by Brandy Wilkey’s 16 kills. Jenn Davis had 14 kills and led the Trojans serving 22-for-22 with three aces. Alarie Craven totaled 47 assists and 13 digs, while Claire Underwood led the way with 29 digs.

West Marshall (1-8, 0-1) hosts Class 2A No. 8 Grundy Center on Thursday before going to East Marshall’s tournament Saturday. South Hardin hosts East Marshall Thursday and hosts its own tournament Saturday.

AGWSR 3, East Marshall 0

ACKLEY – AGWSR served up 11 aces over the course of a three-set sweep of East Marshall, winning Tuesday’s NICL West Division opener 27-25, 25-23, 25-13.

Ashley Sicard had team-highs of six kills and four service aces for the Cougars (2-3, 1-0), while Kim Ellingson had three aces while serving 17-for-17. Danielle Henning had two aces to go with nine assists.

Olivia Ingledue had 19 digs, Madison Fryslie contributed five kills and 10 digs, while Taylor Steinfeldt had three kills. The Cougars hit for a negative percentage on the night, but it was still enough to sweep East Marshall.

The Mustangs (1-3, 0-1) were led by Claire Johnson with five blocks and 7-for-7 serving. Meriel Leavy had four kills and three blocks, while Sam Earley totaled three kills, two blocks and five digs. Libero player Madisen Hinegardner had a team-high 13 digs and Kelsea Anderson had seven more.

Ashley Allen served 14-for-17 with an ace and led with nine assists. Haley Long served 6-for-7, and Brooke Miller contributed two blocks in the loss.

AGWSR hosts South Tama on Thursday night and goes to the Aplington-Parkersburg tournament on Saturday. East Marshall visits South Hardin Thursday and hosts its own tournament Saturday in Le Grand.

South Tama 3, Gladbrook-Reinbeck 0

REINBECK – South Tama claimed a sweep in its NICL West opener, taking down host Gladbrook-Reinbeck in three, 25-21, 25-12, 21-18.

No statistics for South Tama (5-3, 1-0) were available at press time.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (0-2, 0-1) was led by Ellie Stoakes with six kills. Bailea Evenson and setter Jenny Schildroth had four kills apiece, while Britney Keller and Hayley Weber had three kills each.

Schildroth finished with 15 assists, while Keller and Weber led with 11 digs apiece. Alyssa Christopher was 11-for-11 serving to pace the Rebels.
