Manuel Castillo, 701 E. Anson St., made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge and a public intoxication charge. He pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 8 in Magistrate Court. Norma Meade was appointed as counsel. Castillo was released on his own recognizance.
Adam Russell Moore, of State Center, made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge and a driving while revoked charge. He will hire Kevin O’Hare as counsel. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 30. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case.
Ed Gene Anderson Jr., 2783 Garwin Road, made an initial appearance on a serious assault charge. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 30. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.

The public defender’s office was appointed to handle her case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 30. Smith was released on her own recognizance. A condition of release is that she obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to court within 60 days of today’s date.

On Monday, a person associated with Iowa Choice Harvest, 812 E. Linn St., reported damage to three Goodman air conditioning units in an attempt to steal copper fittings. Estimated value of damage was $1,000.
On Monday, Maria Luisa Neave, 703 S. 12th Ave. Apt. #3, reported the theft of a Samsung Galaxy S2 cell phone from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $250.
On Monday, Joleen Renee Olguin, 310 S. Second St. Apt. #3, reported the theft of a Craftsman riding lawn mower and an amplifier and speaker for a car stereo from 1501 Summit St. Estimated value of loss was $1,400. The lawn mower was recovered.
On Monday, Heather Sue O’Neill, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #34, reported the theft of a Vizio 42 inch flatscreen TV, a Social Security card and a birth certificate. Estimated value of loss was $520.
On Sunday, Dan Koester, 903 Benjamin Drive, reported damage to the south door and lock and the theft of items valued at $1,129.53 at 119 E. Main St. Estimated value of damage was $200.

On Sept. 5, Curtis Perry, 415 N. 11th Ave., reported the theft of a Schwinn 10 speed bicycle from the parking lot at Tom’s Cue & Brew, 801 E. Main St. Estimated value of loss was $100.
On Sept. 3, an employee with Kenn’s Transmission, 306 E. Anson St., reported the theft of four wheels with tires from a vehicle while on its property. Estimated value of loss was $280.

On Tuesday, a car driven by Juanita May Gile, 2112 Edgebrook Drive, was eastbound on East Main Street approaching the intersection with South Third Avenue when it entered the intersection on a red light and collided with a car driven by Daniel Michael Flanagan, of Grinnell, which was traveling north on Third Avenue. No injuries were reported. Gile was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $2,000 each.
On Monday, a car driven by Betty Ann Pieper, 501 Reynolds Drive, was attempting to park in the 10 block of East Main Street when it sideswiped a vehicle that was legally parked. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Pieper car was estimated at $300 while the legally parked vehicle received an estimated $2,000 in damage.
On Monday, a car driven by April Sue Kunkel, 1701 Laurel Drive, was southbound on South Center Street approaching the intersection with Nicholas Drive when it collided with the rear of a pickup driven by James Francesco Danza, Royal Palm Beach, Fla., which was stopped awaiting a pedestrian to cross the intersection. No injuries were reported. Kunkel was cited for failure to stop within an assured, clear distance. Damage to the Kunkel car was estimated at $2,000 while the Danza pickup received an estimated $100 in damage.
On Friday, a pickup driven by Douglas Hagele, 2602 Reed Ave., was southbound on South Center Street approaching the intersection with Berle Road when the driver was distracted and it collided with the rear of a car driven by Casey Lynn Lawson, 311 W. Boone St., which was stopped at a red light. No injuries were reported. Hagele was cited for driving while license was denied, cancelled, suspended or revoked, failure to stop within an assured, clear distance and no insurance. Damage to the Hagele pickup was estimated at $1,000 while the Lawson car received an estimated $4,500 in damage.
On Sept. 4, a car driven by Andres Sylva-Morales, 107 N. Fourth St., was northbound on 18th Avenue when the driver became distracted by the radio, turned the steering wheel sharply in an attempt to turn a corner, slid sideways and overturned in the north Marion Street ditch. Sylva-Morales was injured, but not transported. Sylva-Morales was cited for driving under suspension. Damage to the Sylva-Morales car was estimated at $10,000.
