Morning Glory Bakery to lease Orpheum coffee shop

Those monster cookies and desserts area residents have come to adore from the Morning Glory Bakery will soon be available at the Orpheum Theater coffee shop.

The bakery has reached a three-year agreement with the Iowa Valley Community College District to lease the shop from the college and operate it.

“We were looking for a way to expand on Main Street,” said Laurie Wadle, owner of Morning Glory Bakery. “I think it’s a great opportunity.”

Morning Glory will pay Iowa Valley monthly as part of the agreement. The bakery will pay $250 per month for the first year, $275 a month for the second year and $325 a month for the third year as part of the lease.

The Orpheum Theater has been losing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year overall and operating the coffee shop in the red has been one of the reasons why.

“It will help us control our operational costs,” said Iowa Valley Chancellor Chris Duree. “We think the quality products from the coffee shop will be maintained as Morning Glory has a good reputation in the community.”

Wadle said they will continue normal operations at their 13th Street location in Marshalltown. They will make the sandwiches, cookies and other desserts for the Orpheum site at the 13th Street shop. Wadle said they will supply the same coffee line already offered at the Orpheum.

She feels she can save on staff costs as they won’t have personnel on site in the Orpheum making the food products. Wadle said they are hoping to be up and running in the Orpheum by Oct. 1.

In another cost-cutting move, the Orpheum discontinued showing weekly movies on the weekends earlier this month. Iowa Valley continues to look at ways to make the theater center sustainable into the future.
