C. Leslie Wood, age 88, of Union, IA, died on Monday, September 16, 2013 at Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, IA.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 10:30 am at Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church in New Providence, IA. Les Wood will be buried at New Providence Cemetery.

C. Leslie Wood was born on April 6, 1925 in Eldora, Iowa, to Charles D. and S. Ethel (Hibbs) Wood. He graduated from New Providence High School in 1942, and attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa for two years. He joined the US Army in February 1945. On July 28, 1945 he married Ruth Jeanette Williams (daughter of Grover & Esther Williams) then returned to duty. While in the Army Les served in Texas, Kansas and Hawaii attaining the rank of Sergeant and was discharged in early September 1946. Les returned to help Ruth’s family on their farm northwest of Union, Iowa. To this union five children were born , Dave (Nancy) Wood of Highland, Michigan, Diane (Jim) Teske of Union, Linda (Dave) Anderson of Wilton, Iowa, Julie Wood (John Schieffelbein) of Fairfield, Montana, and Jim (Trudie) Wood of Charles City, Iowa. Ruth passed away in 1996.

Les loved farming and raised Black Angus cattle on his farm west of New Providence which he farmed for many years in partnership with his son David Wood. Over the years, Les did custom work for area farmers chopping hay and silage. He also worked at the Union Telephone Company before it was a Cooperative, at Gra-Iron Foundry in Marshalltown, for the ASCS measuring land; he was a rural mail carrier for the New Providence Post Office for 17 years and also delivered the Sunday Des Moines Register for 31 years. In May of 1998, he met Myrna Winther, of Hubbard, Iowa and they were married September 17, 2005.

Les is survived by his wife, Myrna; his five children; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; special step-granddaughter Michelle Aldinger, her husband, Duane and their son Matthew of Iowa Falls; as well as 4 step-children, 6 step grandchildren, and 15 step-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ruth, his sisters, Crescence Hinshaw and Doris Denny, and his brother Lowell Wood.
