PREP VOLLEYBALL: Comets fall in finals of G-R tourney

REINBECK – Four BCLUW hitters had at least 20 kills Saturday during the Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball tournament and that helped the Comets finish in second place overall.

The Comets went 3-2 on the day with both losses coming to North Butler. Gladbrook-Reinbeck also went 3-2 as the Rebels beat North Butler, AGWSR and Valley Lutheran and lost to AGWSR and BCLUW.

BCLUW began its run at its runner-up finish with a 26-24, 25-22 win over AGWSR and then blasted Valley Lutheran 25-9, 25-8 and scored a 25-18, 12-25, 15-13 win over the host Rebels before losing to North Butler in straight sets in pool play and dropping a three-set match in the championship.

Kendall Scurr had 24 kills and 15 digs, Olivia Callaway added 21 kills and 28 digs and Haley Veldhouse and Nicole Montgomery contributed 22 and 21 kills on the day. Mallory Vawter had a team-high 31 digs, Nicolette Simpson delivered a team-high 55 assists and Emily Mossman added 12 digs and 11 aces in the five matches. Bobbi Paper also had 48 assists.

AGWSR beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck 25-19, 25-20 in the Rebels’ tournament opener, but G-R rebounded to beat tourney champion North Butler 24-26, 25-22, 15-11. The loss to BCLUW followed that win before the Rebels ended their day with a 25-18, 17-25, 15-13 win over AGWSR and a 25-7, 25-5 victory over Valley Lutheran.

Britney Keller led the Rebels with 33 kills and eight aces, while Jenny Schildroth dished out 82 assists and served up 10 aces. Hayley Weber had a team-high 36 digs and also blasted 20 kills, while Alyssa Christopher contributed 32 digs. Shelton Hatch finished with 15 kills.

Final results and statistics for AGWSR were not available at press time.

BCLUW (7-8, 2-1) heads to East Marshall (2-7, 0-4) for an NICL West Division match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-9, 1-2) hosts AGWSR (1-2 in NICL play) in its NICL West battle.

West Marshall netters take consolation bracket

WAUKEE – Tough competition forced the West Marshall volleyball team to compete in the consolation bracket at the Waukee Invitational on Saturday, but the Trojans made the most of it.

West Marshall lost to Ankeny and West Des Moines Valley in pool play but rallied to win the consolation bracket following straight set wins over Bedford and Iowa Christian Academy.

The Trojans beat Bedford 12-21, 21-16, 15-8 in pool play but Ankeny knocked off West Marshall 21-8, 21-13 before Valley handed the Trojans a 21-12, 21-13 defeat.

Iowa Christian Academy was the Trojans’ (6-14) first opponent in the consolations and West Marshall scored a 25-11, 25-11 triumph. Only two sets were needed against Bedford the second time around as West Marshall claimed a 25-21, 25-17 victory in the consolation championship.

Morgan Hopper and Jennifer Davis had 24 and 23 kills, respectively, to lead the Trojans on the day, while Brandy Wilkey added 14 kills.

Alarie Craven finished with a team-high 68 assists, six aces and was 40-of-41 from behind the service line. Blair Bailey hit all 31 of her serves successfully and had one ace, while Claire Underwood recorded 45 digs and Gabby Reyerson contributed two blocks.

The Trojans return to NICL West Division action Tuesday when they visit South Tama County.
