Blagg’s 10th-place finish helps ’Cats finish fourth

NEWTON – Rachel Blagg’s 10th place finish at the Newton Invitational on Tuesday helped the Bobcat girls’ cross country team take fourth in the standings.

Blagg, a junior, crossed the line in 15 minutes, 48 seconds and trailed ninth place by seven seconds as the Bobcats scored 91 points overall.

Marshalltown trailed third place Southeast Polk by just six points and was within striking distance of runner-up Oskaloosa, which finished with 74 points. Des Moines Roosevelt won the team title with 34 points as all seven Rider runners finished in the top 14 positions.

Blagg was followed by Michaela Huey’s 13th place finish for Marshalltown. Huey hit the line in 15:58, while Wynn Tan was 18th in a time of 16:25. Ellyn Boland ended up 25th, Becky Schwartzenburg crossed in 32nd and Ashley Macbeth was 35th overall.

West Marshalll also competed and finished with 211 points in seventh place. The Trojans’ top runner was Allison Hilleman and she ended up 39th overall with a time of 17:42. Magie Sodders was 49th, Emma Kielman 51st, Madie Streeter 53rd, Abby Steiert 55th, Maddy Vawter 56th and Ashley Pfantz ended up 57th.

Newton’s Grace Coen won the individual title with an impressive time of 14:31, but the Cardinal’s next best finish was Ellie Horn in 36th. The host Cardinals finished sixth in the standings with 146 points. Grinnell was behind Marshalltown as well with 95 points.

West Marshall next runs in the PCM Invite at the Gateway Golf Course in Monroe at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, while Marshalltown heads to the Iowa City West Invitational on Tuesday. Action starts at 4:30 p.m.
