Tigers netters rally to sweep of NIACC

MASON CITY – The Marshalltown volleyball team had significant deficits in game one and game three of its Iowa Community College Athletic Conference match with rival NIACC on Thursday night.

But the Tigers still managed to record the sweep on the road.

Trailing 16-7 in the opener and 8-2 to start game three, the Tigers rallied to beat the host Trojans 28-26, 25-11, 27-25.

The victory improved the Tigers 11-12 overall and 2-3 in the ICCAC.

“We fought hard tonight,” Marshalltown Community College coach Chris Brees said. “This was a big conference win that we needed. The team battled back and showed what they are capable of.”

Miranda Smith led the Tigers with eight kills and three blocks, while Ashley Salgado finished with 15 digs and two aces. Katelyn Yauslin had six kills and Meghann Cole added five.

It was Salgado who keyed the comeback in the game three win. Trailing 16-7, Salgado served it seven straight times to get the Tigers back in the game. Cole also helped serve MCC out of a 24-21 hole and the Tigers eventually won it by two.

After a dominating game two win, the Tigers fell down 8-2 in the final frame.

Marshalltown native Mehlon Maxwell though served the Tigers back into the game with eight straight points.

That allowed the Tigers to pull through, winning 27-25.

NIACC dropped to 11-11 overall and 1-5 in ICCAC play.

The Tigers will next host Iowa Central at the Student Activity Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday. MCC then heads to Pella to face the Central College junior varsity and the AIB junior varsity at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
