Hometown: Born in Carroll. I moved to Eldora when I was 12, so I consider Eldora my hometown.
Family: I’ve been married to Steve Bolar for 39 years. We have two adult sons; Zach and Luke. Granddaughter is Tiana Bolar. Also grand-parenting Zoeie, Leila and Tayesen.
Pets: Cats Socko and Tiger Lily.
Hobbies and interests: I love gardening, being outside and bicycle riding when I can find the time. Mostly, I enjoy spending time with family and friends.
Occupation: Self-employed as a contracted development associate for the Community Foundation of Marshall County.
What that means: I work with the Community Foundation’s board of directors to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that improve the quality of life in Marshall County. We also work with business, families, individuals and not-for-profit organizations to establish permanent endowments. Those endowments will provide funds forever for agencies and other charitable causes. It is a great way for people to leave a legacy and give back to the community.
Tenure: Almost three years.
Best Part of Job: I really care about the well-being of Marshall County communities and the Community Foundation is a resource to help provide for the future.
If I could change jobs I would: Be a naturalist, a flower shop employee, serve as a para-educator, or work with kids. I can’t decide what I want to be when I grow up.
Books: I just finished “Population 485” by Michael Perry. My all time favorite author is Madeleine L’Engle.
Movie: “Aladdin,” directed by Ron Clements.
Food: Other than chocolate, probably anything with pasta.
Sports: Any team my granddaughter is currently playing for. And Iowa State University Cyclones.
Best part about living here: There are always wonderful things to do – often more than we can get to. Marshalltown offers a small town atmosphere with city opportunities.
Most influential people: My parents first and foremost. I have had some great teachers all the way through my education who have had a tremendous effect on me.
Local involvement: Currently Marshalltown Rotary Club, Spread the Words Read by Third, Iowa River Valley Early Childhood Association and Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce Past Presidents.
Advice on Life: Pay attention to the details; enjoy life’s little pleasures; always give more than you receive; take care of each other and spend time with family and friends.
