Cookoff draws competition, tasty samples

Locals savored and sampled six different teams’ barbecue and chili at the Oktemberfest cookoff Sunday.

These teams were competing for the best barbecue, chili, chicken, pork, burgers and beef.

After two hours of sampling, the awards were given.

Home Grown Smokers won the best chili award and the grand champion award.

Austin Krough of Home Grown Smokers was thrilled about the victory.

“It feels great,” Krough said. “Winning feels really good.”

The People’s Choice chili and barbecue award went to Bubba’s Burnt Ends.

“It really feels great,” Bruce “Bubba” Campbell said. “It’s fun for everybody; we need more people out here to enjoy it.”

The food is judged by six “blind” judges as well as people sampling the food. The awards include the title, a cash prize and a trophy.

Eric Boone, Oktemberfest board member and chair of the cookoff said this was the 18th year the competition has been held.

“We had a great year,” Boone said. “We had wonderful teams and I’m looking forward to next year.”
