Legacy of giving reaches MMSC

Diane and Joe Hunt are on a mission to have Joe’s parents, Verle and Ellen Hunt, live on through their giving to the community.

That mission made a stop at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center Monday as they presented a $100,000 check to the MMSC Foundation, courtesy of the Verle Hunt estate.

“We are so grateful for this charitable gift,” said Val Ruff, director of the foundation.

Ruff said the money will be used toward the upcoming building project at MMSC.

Diane Hunt said this donation is one of 12 they are making totaling more than $1 million in the community.

“They just wanted to give back to the community and have chosen several charities,” she said.

Larry McKibben was the longtime attorney for Verle and Ellen and he said these donations speak to the giving nature of area residents.

“Marshalltown has a long history of charitable leaders and I think Verle and Ellen have joined that leadership,” McKibben said.

Kevin Hitchins, president of the MMSC Foundation, said he hopes people follow the Hunts’ lead and that this donation will lead to others for the foundation in the future.
