Bobcat girls go head-to-head with state’s best
IOWA CITY – Running amongst a state meet-caliber field, the Marshalltown girls cross country team placed ninth out of 12 teams with a score of 221 at the Iowa City West Invitational Tuesday.
Rachel Blagg led the Bobcats with a 14th-place finish in 15 minutes, 40 seconds amongst a field that featured 10 ranked squads at the University of Iowa Ashton Cross Country Course. Michaela Huey came through 10 seconds behind Blagg in 21st place, though Marshalltown’s next runner was 40 spots back.
Iowa City West’s Ashlynn Yokom -rated third in Class 4A – cruised to the victory in 14:23 finishing 26 seconds ahead of Davenport Assumption’s Joy Ripslinger, the ninth-rated runner in 3A. Class 4A No. 3 ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy captured the team title with 57 points, while 3A’s top ranked Davenport Assumption (85) and 4A No. 5 Iowa City West (98) rounded out the top three.
Victoria Jones (17:11), Ellyn Boland (17:14) and Wynn Tan (17:17) came through 61st-63rd to wrap up the Bobcats’ team score. Ashley MacBeth (17:25) placed 66th and Becky Schwartzenburg (17:56) was 73rd.
Muscatine (115) and Bettendorf, ranked 10th and 15th, respectively, in Class 4A, took fourth and fifth. 3A’s No. 11 Mount Vernon-Lisbon (143) and No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier (188) took the next two spots, while 2A No. 8 Iowa City Regina was eighth (197).
Pekin, rated second in Class 1A, took 10th to complete the rotisserie of ranked squads. Seven ranked runners placed in the top-10, with the other three representing Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Marshalltown returns to action Oct. 10 at the Des Moines Hoover Invite at Ewing Park starting at 4:30 p.m.
